About hostel.com.lk
A free, independent directory of hostels and backpacker accommodation across Sri Lanka.
What this directory is for
hostel.com.lk exists for two groups of people: backpackers and budget travellers looking for hostels in Sri Lanka, and independent hostel owners who want to be found by those travellers without paying commissions to large international booking platforms.
If you are planning a backpacking trip through Sri Lanka and want to find a cheap hostel in Kandy, a beach hostel in Mirissa, a backpacker lodge in Ella, or budget accommodation in Colombo, this directory lists independent hostels with their direct phone, WhatsApp, email, and website. You contact the hostel directly. You pay them directly. No middleman, no commissions added to your room price, no booking platform fees.
Why a Sri Lanka hostel directory?
Sri Lanka has become one of South Asia's most popular destinations for backpackers, digital nomads, surfers, and budget travellers. The country offers extraordinary variety in a small space: ancient cultural sites at Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya; the colonial fort of Galle; the surf beaches of Mirissa, Weligama, and Arugam Bay; the tea plantations of Ella, Nuwara Eliya, and Haputale; the cultural heart at Kandy with its Temple of the Tooth; the wildlife of Yala and Udawalawe; and the busy capital of Colombo as a gateway in and out.
Around all of these destinations, small independent hostels and backpacker guesthouses have opened to serve travellers who want clean, friendly, affordable accommodation rather than five-star resorts. Many of these hostels are run by families or by single owner-operators. Most do not have the marketing budget to compete on the front page of large international booking sites. hostel.com.lk gives them a free way to be discovered by travellers, and gives travellers a curated way to find them.
Where can I find hostels in Sri Lanka?

How hostel.com.lk works
Hostel owners in Sri Lanka can add a free listing in a few minutes. The process uses passwordless email sign-in (a one-time link sent to your inbox - no password to remember or forget), then a short form for your hostel name, address, contact details, and description. Listings are reviewed by an admin within 24 hours before going live.
Travellers can browse listings by city, see direct contact details (phone, WhatsApp, email, website where provided), and reach out to the hostel directly to ask about availability, prices, and amenities. There is no booking engine on this site - all bookings happen directly between you and the hostel, on whatever terms you both agree.
What this directory is not
hostel.com.lk is not a booking site. We do not take payments, hold reservations, or charge any fee. We are not affiliated with Booking.com, Hostelworld, Agoda, Airbnb, or any other booking platform. We do not write or moderate reviews - sites like Google Maps and TripAdvisor handle reviews better than a small directory could.
We list independent hostels and small backpacker accommodation only. We do not list five-star resorts, large hotel chains, or short-term holiday rentals.
How to support the directory
If you found a great hostel through this directory, the best thing you can do is leave the hostel a Google review. That helps the next traveller and helps the hostel become more discoverable. If you own a hostel, the best thing you can do is keep your listing details up to date and share the directory with other independent hostel owners you know.
