The hillsides above town

Streets climbing out of the centre, and further out the Hanthana range. Quieter, cooler, and often with a view over the city. The trade-off is that almost everything requires a tuk-tuk after dark, and the walk back up is steep.

Peradeniya and the western approach

Near the Royal Botanical Gardens and the university. Useful if you are travelling onward by train, because some hill-country services stop at Peradeniya Junction where boarding is less of a scrum than at Kandy station.

How to Reach Kandy

Kandy is on the main railway line from Colombo Fort, and the train takes roughly three hours through the Kadugannawa hills. Intercity and ordinary buses run from Colombo throughout the day and are usually faster than the train but far less scenic. Coming from the airport at Katunayake, most travellers either take a direct private transfer or go via Colombo. From the north, buses connect Kandy with Dambulla, Sigiriya and Anuradhapura.

Getting Around Kandy

The city centre is genuinely walkable and the loop around the lake is pleasant on foot. Beyond that, tuk-tuks are the default. Agree the fare before you get in or use a metered ride-hailing app, which is widely available in Kandy and removes the negotiation entirely. Local buses run to Peradeniya and the surrounding villages cheaply but are crowded and rarely signposted in English.

The Sri Dalada Maligawa, on the north shore of the lake. Time your visit around one of the daily puja ceremonies. Shoulders and knees must be covered and shoes are left outside.

Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya

Large botanical garden a short ride west of the city, easy to reach by local bus or tuk-tuk and a straightforward half-day.

Udawattakele Forest Reserve

Forest reserve on the ridge directly behind the temple, with marked trails and a lot of birdlife. It closes in the late afternoon.

Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha statue

The large white Buddha visible from most of the city. The climb up is short and steep, and the view back over Kandy is the reason to do it.

Esala Perahera

Kandy's major festival, held over several nights around July or August depending on the lunar calendar. Accommodation across the city fills up and rates rise sharply, so book far ahead if your dates overlap.

Kandy is a comfortable place to travel solo. It is a university city, English is widely spoken, and the tourist infrastructure is mature without being aggressive. Evenings are quiet by backpacker-town standards: there is no strip of beach bars, and most hostels are residential-neighbourhood properties where late noise is not welcome. Solo travellers who want a social scene usually find it in the common areas of the hostel itself rather than out in the town. As anywhere, the standard advice applies at the bus stands and in the market, where crowds are dense and bags are easy to lose track of.
