Dambulla is a working town in the Cultural Triangle, best known for the cave temple complex cut into the rock above it, a UNESCO World Heritage site containing a large collection of Buddhist murals and statues in a series of caves. It is also the region's transport junction, which is why many backpackers end up staying here whether or not they planned to.
Accommodation is spread along the main roads through and around town and in the villages nearby. Dambulla is less scenic than Sigiriya but considerably more practical: buses in every direction leave from here, and there are ordinary shops, ATMs and places to eat.

Why Stay in a Hostel in Dambulla
Dambulla is the logistics answer to the Cultural Triangle. From one base you can reach Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, the national parks around Habarana and, at a stretch, Anuradhapura, all by public bus. If your itinerary is more than one site, staying in Dambulla usually means less moving of bags than staying at each site in turn.

How to Reach Dambulla
Dambulla has no railway station but is a major bus junction. Buses run to and from Kandy, Colombo, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee and Habarana throughout the day. From Kandy the road journey takes a few hours. Most travellers heading to Sigiriya pass through Dambulla and change here.
Getting Around Dambulla
Tuk-tuks are the default for the temple climb and for reaching Sigiriya. Local buses along the main roads are cheap and frequent for the longer hops. The climb from the road up to the cave temple is on foot and takes a while in the heat.

The Golden Temple complex: a series of caves under an overhanging rock, filled with painted murals and Buddha statues. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off, and there is a steep walk up to the entrance.

The rock fortress is a short ride north and is the most common day trip from Dambulla.
Polonnaruwa
The ancient capital to the east, usually visited as a long day trip and best explored by bicycle once you are there.

The largest produce market in the country, busiest very early in the morning. Not a tourist attraction, which is rather the point.

Dambulla is a town people pass through rather than hang around in, and the hostel scene reflects that: quieter and more transactional than Ella or Mirissa. It is easy and unthreatening to travel here solo. The main thing to plan around is heat, since the Cultural Triangle sits at low elevation on a dry plain and midday is punishing between site visits.
