How to Reach Colombo

Bandaranaike International Airport is at Katunayake, north of the city. An expressway connects it to Colombo and there are airport bus services as well as taxis and ride-hailing cars. Colombo Fort station is the origin for the main line to Kandy and the hill country, the coastal line south to Galle and Matara, and the northern line to Anuradhapura and Jaffna. Long-distance buses run from the Pettah terminals and from Makumbura Multimodal Centre for expressway services to the south.

Getting Around Colombo

Ride-hailing apps are the simplest option in Colombo and take the guesswork out of tuk-tuk fares. The coastal railway line is a cheap and genuinely useful way to move between the Fort and the southern suburbs including Mount Lavinia. Buses cover the city comprehensively and cost very little, but route numbers and destinations are often signed only in Sinhala or Tamil.
