How to Reach Mirissa

Mirissa is on the southern coastal route between Galle and Matara. Buses along the Galle Road pass frequently and will drop you on the main road a short walk from the beach. The nearest railway stations on the coastal line are at Weligama and Matara, both a short tuk-tuk ride away. From Colombo, the Southern Expressway makes the road journey considerably faster than the coastal train, though the train is the more enjoyable ride.

Getting Around Mirissa

Everything in Mirissa itself is walkable. Tuk-tuks handle trips to Weligama, Galle and the surrounding beaches, and scooter hire is widely available. The Galle Road carries fast through traffic, so take care crossing it and be cautious on a scooter at night.

Whale watching

Boats leave from Mirissa harbour early in the morning during the season, roughly from late in the year through to April. Operators vary considerably in how they behave around the animals, so ask your hostel which ones keep their distance.

Coconut Tree Hill
