How to Reach Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is one of the harder places to reach on the island. There is no nearby railway station of use, so it is a long road journey from almost anywhere. Buses run via Pottuvil from Colombo, from Ella and the hill country via Wellawaya and Monaragala, and up the coast from the south via Tissamaharama. Many travellers coming from Ella take a private van or shared transfer because the bus connections involve changes.

Getting Around Arugam Bay

The strip is walkable. Scooter and tuk-tuk hire is common and is how most people reach the outer surf points, which are spread out along the coast north and south. Roads outside town are quiet but unlit at night, and wildlife on the road is a genuine hazard in this area after dark.
