Why Stay in a Hostel in Trincomalee
The east coast is dry and calm during the months when the southwest monsoon has shut down the beaches near Galle and Mirissa. Trincomalee adds something Arugam Bay does not have: a real city with history attached, and easy access to Pigeon Island for snorkelling. It is also considerably less developed for tourism than the south, which is either the appeal or the drawback depending on what you want.

Uppuveli
The closer of the two beach areas to the city, a short ride north. The usual backpacker choice, with a reasonable spread of places to eat.

Further north, quieter and more spread out, and the departure point for Pigeon Island. Fewer places to eat outside your accommodation.
Trincomalee town
Near the harbour, the temple and the bus and railway stations. Practical rather than scenic, and no beach on your doorstep.
How to Reach Trincomalee
Trincomalee has a railway station with services connecting via the northern line, and buses run from Colombo, Kandy, Dambulla, Habarana and Anuradhapura. The road route from the Cultural Triangle via Habarana is the one most backpackers use, since it combines naturally with Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa.
Getting Around Trincomalee
Tuk-tuks connect the town with Uppuveli and Nilaveli and are the default for everything. Buses run up the coast road and are cheap. Scooter hire is available and the coast road is flat and straightforward, though quieter roads are unlit at night.

Koneswaram Temple and Fort Frederick
The Hindu temple on the cliff at Swami Rock, inside the walls of the old fort. The site is active, so dress accordingly, and there are usually deer in the fort grounds.
Pigeon Island National Park
A small island off Nilaveli, reached by boat, known for snorkelling over coral and reef sharks. It is a national park with an entry fee and gets crowded in season.
Uppuveli and Nilaveli beaches
Long, wide beaches that are at their best during the east coast dry season.

Boat trips run from the Trincomalee area during the east coast season. As with the south coast, operator behaviour varies and sightings are never guaranteed.

Trincomalee and the beaches north of it are quieter and less traveller-dense than the south coast, which suits some people and not others. Solo travel is straightforward. The important practical point is seasonal: outside the east coast dry season, much of the beach accommodation closes or runs at minimal service, and the sea is rough.
